Highmark Health Solutions laid off 52 people this week, with 21 occurring at the Higmark operation in East Pennsboro Township in Cumberland County, and a similar amount occurring in Pittsburgh. The remainder affect Highmark locations elsewhere in Pennsylvania and in Delaware and West Virginia.
Most of the affected employees will lose their jobs in early April, Highmark spokesman Aaron Billger said.
Highmark Health Solutions is an affiliate of Highmark and is essentially “our technology company,” Billger said.
He said the layoffs are part an ongoing effort to streamline operations and find efficiencies. He said the employees losing their jobs can apply for other jobs within Highmark, which he said has about 1,000 openings at any given time. Those with more than a year of service will be offered severance packages.
Highmark recently posted strong financial results and said membership retention has been strong.
