TIA Encourages HHS to Examine Changes to Achieve Full Potential of Telehealth

The Telecommunications Industry Association (TIA), the leading association representing the manufacturers and suppliers of high-tech communications networks, joined a number of stakeholders in urging newly-confirmed Secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services Sylvia Burwell to take a technology-neutral approach towards a fully-connected health ICT ecosystem. In a letter sent to Secretary Burwell on Monday, TIA and others said such an ecosystem must embrace the diversity of solutions that allow for innovative improvements in care that technology can provide at each stage along the continuum of care.

Specifically, TIA and others encouraged the Secretary to examine changes to the Medicare Shared Savings Program (MSSP) that would help realize the potential of telehealth and remote monitoring by:

(1) requesting public input on such issues in the forthcoming MSSP rulemaking proceeding;

(2) using the Secretary’s existing authority to waive the current restrictions in section 1834(m) of the Social Security Act on Medicare reimbursements on connected care services for ACO MSSP provider participants.

TIA will continue to work towards gathering stakeholder consensus towards improved telehealth allowances which will result in improved health care services for millions of Americans.
