Decision delayed on New Hampshire hospital network hearing

New Hampshire’s insurance commissioner says he needs more time to decide whether to hold a hearing on the narrow provider network for individuals buying health insurance under the Affordable Care Act.

Commissioner Roger Sevigny had previously agreed to hear a complaint from Margaret McCarthy, a patient at one of the 10 hospitals that were excluded from Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield’s new network. But after Anthem argued that McCarthy waited too long to ask for a hearing, Sevigny said he would reconsider. He was supposed to decide by Tuesday but instead said he will give Anthem until April 22 to respond to McCarthy’s latest arguments.

McCarthy, a patient at Rochester’s Frisbie Memorial Hospital, argues the deadline for requesting a hearing didn’t apply because the network approval process wasn’t public.
