Breakthrough reported in new Pennsylvania insurance system

Philadelphia-based health insurer Independence Blue Cross says it has begun enrolling people into its health insurance plans through the federal government’s online portal after two days of glitches.

Independence Blue Cross spokeswoman Kathleen Conlon said Thursday that she didn’t know the exact number of people enrolled through the healthcare.gov website.

It appears to be a breakthrough after two days of glitches that, for some, extended into a third day Thursday.

Scharrie Chambers, an employee at insurer Highmark’s Allentown retail store, says glitches continue to emerge and she’s unaware of anyone who’s sought help from store employees successfully enrolling.

Coverage under the plans begins Jan. 1.

Pennsylvania is one of 36 states whose online exchanges are being run by the federal government after Gov. Tom Corbett declined the job.
