Beaver County woman accused of duping Medicare for $200K

A Beaver County woman forged signatures of doctors and other medical providers to bilk Medicare out of $200,000 in reimbursements, federal prosecutors said.

A federal grand jury on Tuesday indicted Mary Monica Wilson-Lefler, 62, of Economy on a charge of health care fraud for falsifying 83 claims for powered pressure reducing mattresses that two area medical equipment companies submitted to Security Blue, Highmark Inc.’s Medicare program.

There was no phone listed for Wilson-Lefler and court document’s don’t list her attorney.

Wilson-Lefler, who also goes by Monica Wilson, visited four long-term care facilities between July 2008 and November 2011 to find the 83 patients whose names she used in the fraud, prosecutors say.

She filled out all the paperwork falsely claiming that the patients had pressure sores, which would qualify them for the special mattresses, prosecutors say. In some cases, she forged the signatures of the facilities’ staff and submitted the paperwork to the patients’ doctors so they would sign prescriptions, according to investigators. In other cases, she is accused of forging the prescriptions.

She then had the two companies submit about $400,000 in claims and Medicare paid about $200,000. The indictment doesn’t identify the companies or the four facilities.
