The former state police superintendent who waged an unsuccessful campaign for Congress last year has been hired by Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Rhode Island to investigate health care fraud.
Blue Cross on Thursday announced that Brendan Doherty will serve as director of its special investigations unit. The company says he will be responsible for devising and implementing strategies to prevent, detect and eliminate fraud, waste and abuse.
Doherty was the 2012 Republican challenger to Democratic U.S. Rep. David Cicilline (sihs-ihl-EE’-nee) in the state’s 1st Congressional District.
Blue Cross’s chief administrative officer says Doherty will play a critical role addressing fraud as the company tries to bring down the cost of health care.
Doherty is also chairman of the board at the federal Wyatt Detention Facility in Central Falls.
