An estimated 1,950 people took steps toward improved health during three community events organized by BlueCross BlueShield of South Carolina to mark the seventh annual National Walk@Lunch Day.
The participants walked an estimated combined total of 2,550 miles — roughly the distance from Myrtle Beach, S.C., to Los Angeles, Calif. — during the lunchtime walks at the Statehouse in Columbia, Marion Square in Charleston and Falls Park in Greenville. Approximately 750 people took part in the Columbia walk, along with 350 in Charleston and more than 800 in Greenville.
In addition to the community events, more than 40 South Carolina companies sponsored lunchtime walks for employees.
Blue Cross and Blue Shield companies created National Walk@Lunch Day to encourage working Americans to walk daily during their lunch breaks.
Lunchtime walks are designed to fit into — not compete with — everyone’s busy schedules,” said Dr. Laura Long, BlueCross’ chief medical officer and vice president of clinical innovation and population health. “A half-hour of walking each day has significant health benefits, including lowering the risk of heart attack, stroke and diabetes.
“The lunch hour is a great time for people to work moderate exercise into their schedules,” she said. “Just 30 minutes each day can make a big difference in your health.”
