Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan plans to ask the U.S. Supreme Court to look at a case that’s likely to cost the insurer millions of dollars.
Blue Cross is accused by an auto parts supplier of charging hidden fees. An appeals court recently affirmed the decision of Detroit federal Judge Victoria Roberts, who found Blue Cross was “self-dealing” and violating labor law for years.
The insurer is asking Roberts to suspend any additional legal action while it asks the Supreme Court to intervene, a process that could take months. Hi-Lex Controls has until Friday to respond.
Blue Cross now owes more than $6 million to Hi-Lex, and it could be on the hook for millions more in similar lawsuits by other customers.
