As part of its mission to encourage innovation and be a catalyst for constructive change, Blue Shield of California today announced it has renewed its agreement with well-being improvement leader Healthways to continue offering the award-winning SilverSneakers® Fitness Program to eligible members in California. The renewal follows a recent announcement that Blue Shield has agreed to provide Healthways MeYou Health-branded social well-being improvement solutions to support their Wellvolution health and wellness program.
SilverSneakers, the nation’s leading exercise program designed exclusively for older adults, has been available to members of select Blue Shield of California plans since 2009. With this extension, members of eligible Blue Shield of California Medicare Advantage and Medicare Supplement plans will continue to enjoy the benefits of the SilverSneakers program.
The effectiveness of the program is evidenced through Blue Shield of California and SilverSneakers member surveys. According to the 2012 survey results, 67 percent of Blue Shield of California SilverSneakers enrollees reported their health as excellent or very good, more than twice the national average for older adults. In addition, 88 percent of Blue Shield of California respondents reported no impairment in activities of daily living, as compared to the national average of 62 percent for older adults. More than half of surveyed members reported improvement in arthritis pain and lower back pain since participating in the program.
“By extending its offering of the Silver Sneakers Fitness Program, Blue Shield of California continues to provide a high-quality well-being improvement solution to its older adult members,” said Ben R. Leedle, Jr., Healthways president and chief executive officer. “Blue Shield of California is committed to enhancing the health of its members, and we are very pleased to offer their older adult members a user-friendly, proven program that provides a unique combination of physical fitness and social experiences.”
SilverSneakers was founded in 1992 and serves more than 11 million eligible members. The Healthways fitness center network offers convenient access to more than 15,000 participating fitness and wellness facilities nationwide.
