Pennsylvania DME Company celebrates 30 years in business

Tom & Jerry’s Home Medical Service is celebrating its 30th anniversary. Established by brothers Tom and Jerry Means in 1983, the business has locations in Connellsville and Youngwood and remains family-owned by Judy Means, Melissa Means, Pamela Thomas, Carrie Myers and Lauri Means, who is retired.

The idea for a medical equipment store grew out of the need for such products at Means Personal Care Home at that time. The brothers purchased the former George’s Floor Store on Route 119 and initially carried only durable medical equipment, oxygen and oxygen-delivery systems, incontinence products and other patient supplies. In the late 1980s, they added scrubs, which now come in many sizes, colors and designs for men and women. Nurses shoes are also sold.

Tom & Jerry’s moved to the present location at 145 N. Eighth St. in the early 1990s and built a new showroom there in 1998. The Youngwood store is located at 310 Third St.

Products include home medical equipment, surgical supplies, braces, hosiery, ostomy supplies, mastectomy forms and bras, power chairs, wheelchairs and hospital beds. Free delivery is offered with purchase.

Other items carried by Tom & Jerry’s Home Medical Service are canes, walkers, bath benches, grab bars, hand-held showers, raised commode seats, blue pads, adult diapers and almost anything else needed by the at-home patient. Many of these products also make daily living easier for anyone. Hospitals send a referral for larger equipment, and a driver delivers and sets it up in the customer’s home.

Those who need supplemental oxygen can find it at Tom & Jerry’s. The store carries multiple forms of respiratory equipment, including oxygen concentrators, liquid oxygen and portable units. Those with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease who require bi-level positive airway pressure machines can obtain equipment and maintenance at the store, which also carries continuous positive airway pressure machines and equipment for sleep apnea. A respiratory therapist on staff can set up CPAP units and provide instruction on other oxygen equipment.

Tom & Jerry’s customers on life-sustaining equipment have access to 24-hour emergency service that provides backup power in the event of an electrical outage.

Customers reportedly appreciate the many services offered and the fact that Tom & Jerry’s staff handles insurance billing for them.

Tom & Jerry’s staff is composed of many family members as well as longtime employees. It is family owned and operated with personalized service for customers. The friendly staff is knowledgeable and can assist customers with their special needs.

To celebrate the 30th anniversary of the business this week, refreshments are being served daily through Oct. 1 with the added fun of daily giveaways, a raffle, and sale prices — uniforms are 15 percent off and equipment, including lift chairs, is 10 percent off.

“We greatly appreciate our customers and the support of this community. They are why we have been here for 30 years. In turn, we have donated back to many organizations over the years,” Melissa Means said.

“We rent and sell supplies and equipment for every sort of medical need to those who have insurance and those who do not. We give personal service to each of our customers and find a way to meet their needs. We employ 19 people and we are community-oriented,” Thomas said.

“For us, it’s about serving the people and that’s why we are having this customer appreciation and celebration. Thirty years is a long time for a family-owned business. We have had to adapt to many changes over the years. Family vacations for us growing up were going to Harrisburg to get approval to build the next expansion. Before the nursing home facility was retired, it had 79 beds. The residents there had medical equipment needs and so that is how Tom & Jerry’s came to be and so this has been our life,” Myers said. “We have made a living helping people and this is where we are 30 years later. It is awesome to look back over those years.”
