On January 1st 2013 medical equipment in South Carolina will be officially exempt from the state’s 6% sales tax.
The South Carolina General Assembly, in June 2011, passed a bill that provided the Home Medical Equipment exemption from South Carolina Sales Tax.
The tax had been a point of contention with providers as they couldn’t collect taxes from key customers such as Medicare and Medicaid beneficiaries. Bobby Horton, Executive Director of the South Carolina Medical Equipment Services Association said “We’re the only industry in the state that had to pay sales tax but couldn’t collect it,”
The bill that exempted HME from the state’s sales tax phased it out in increments from July 2011 through December 2012.
